President John Dramani Mahama has announced that 14 billion Ghana cedis has been allocated to the Big Push infrastructure programme to dual major highways across the country.
He said the funds will ensure contractors receive 15% mobilization to begin work, with a commitment from the Finance Ministry to pay all certified claims within two weeks of submission.
“This year, we set aside 14 billion Ghana cedis for the Big Push. The Finance Minister has assured me that all contractors will get 15% mobilization to begin work.
“He has also assured me that any contractor who submits a payment certificate will be paid within two weeks. So no contractor will have the excuse of not being paid. We want to see work start as soon as the contracts are awarded,” President Mahama said.
Speaking during his post-election thank you tour in the Upper West Region on Thursday, May 15, the President said cabinet will soon approve a list of priority projects under the programme, most of which will focus on road infrastructure.
“Cabinet will soon approve priority projects under the Big Push infrastructure programme. A significant number of these projects will focus on roads, including the dualization of major highways such as Accra-Kumasi, Accra-Takoradi, and Accra-Aflao,” he said.
He added that a new expressway will be constructed between Accra and Kumasi to reduce travel time between the two cities to just two and a half hours.
