Legal practitioner and Acting Chief Executive Officer of the National Petroleum Authority (NPA), Godwin Edudzi Tamaklo, has described the 15-year jail term handed self-styled evangelist Nana Agradaa as excessive for a first-time offender.
The former fetish priestess-turned-evangelist was sentenced to 15 years in prison with hard labour by an Accra Circuit Court on Thursday, July 3.
The verdict, delivered by Her Honour Evelyn Asamoah, followed charges of charlatanic advertisement and defrauding by false pretences.
In a social media post sighted by ModernGhana News, Mr. Tamaklo argued that a lighter sentence would have been more appropriate.
“Fifteen years for a first-time offender is excessive,” he wrote.
Nana Agradaa, born Patricia Asiedu, was found guilty of luring victims with claims of possessing spiritual powers to “double money” for members of the public.
The conviction stems from her infamous 2022 televised broadcast, which led several individuals to hand over large sums of money in hopes of miraculous financial returns.
The leader of the Weija-based Heaven Way Church was arrested in November 2022 over the alleged “money-doubling scam” popularly known as ‘Sika Gari.’
Multiple videos shared online at the time showed her church members lamenting being duped by the former priestess-turned-evangelist.
