The Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) has announced the arrest of 2,241 foreign nationals in Accra as part of an operation targeting individuals engaged in street begging.

According to the Service, the arrested individuals include 961 males—comprising 577 children and 384 adults—and 1,280 females, made up of 755 children and 525 adults.

The operation, which took place on Friday, May 17, aimed to repatriate undocumented foreign nationals in a humane manner and disrupt criminal networks that facilitate their activities, the GIS said in a statement.

It was carried out in areas including Sabon Zongo, Nima, Abossey Okai, and the Obetsebi Roundabout, among others.

“They are currently being taken through the necessary processes, including security and medical screening, at the National Headquarters in Accra,” the statement noted.

The Immigration Service assured the public that all detainees would be treated with dignity.

“The Service assures all stakeholders and the general public that the detainees will be handled with the highest professionalism, with respect for their human rights,” the statement added.
