Ghana has marked its 65th Republic Day anniversary with a National Cadet Corps parade featuring groups from basic, junior, and senior high schools across the country at the Black Star Square.
The commemoration, themed “Re-emerging Youth: Reflecting on Discipline and Loyalty to Country – A Call to Review and Reset,” witnessed over 20,000 youth marching in regimented order.
In a keynote address delivered on behalf of the President, the Minister of Defence, Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, emphasised the role of the National Cadet Corps, established 71 years ago at the Ghana Secondary Technical School, in instilling values of patriotism and volunteerism among the youth.
He praised the corps for its growth and its ability to mobilize large numbers of young people at no cost to the government.
“The discipline you display today reflects a promising and secure future for our nation,” he stated, urging young Ghanaians to contribute positively to society.
The minister outlined several government initiatives aimed at supporting the youth, including the recruitment of 12,000 individuals into the Ghana Armed Forces over the next four years.
He also highlighted educational programs such as free tertiary education for individuals with disabilities, free sanitary pads for students, and the “no fees-stress” initiative for first-year university students.
On his part, the Minister for Youth Development and Empowerment, Mr. George Opare Addo, underscored the significance of the day as a moment to reflect on Ghana’s journey from colonial rule to republican status and to renew the collective commitment to youth development and civic responsibility.
He called for a review of the challenges faced by the youth, including unemployment and limited access to resources, while urging a commitment to innovative solutions.
The Minister affirmed the government’s dedication to empowering youth through programs aimed at job creation and skills development.
He noted that the occasion serves as a platform for youth to understand the government’s vision and their role in shaping the future of Ghana.
He expressed gratitude for the support from families and communities that helped organize the event, emphasising that success is a collective effort.
“Government alone cannot achieve success. Together, as young people, we can tackle the greatest challenge we face: education,” he stated.
As part of the celebration, awards were presented to distinguished individuals for their exceptional support of the cadet corps.
