There are growing concerns that the missing students may have drowned There are growing concerns that the missing students may have drowned

A tragic incident has left seven students from Lawra Senior High School feared dead after a canoe capsized in the Black Volta River near Dikpe, Upper West Region, on Saturday morning.

The students, part of a group of ten from the school’s cadet corps, were reportedly engaged in a routine morning jogging exercise when they attempted to cross the river into Burkina Faso.

According to a report by myjoyonline.com, the canoe overturned midway, throwing all occupants into the water. Three students managed to swim to safety, but the remaining seven are missing.

Local authorities, including the Ghana Education Service, Lawra Municipal Assembly, and Municipal Security Council, have launched a search and rescue operation.

Divers are combing the river, but the Black Volta’s strong currents are hindering efforts, raising concerns that the missing students may have drowned.

The reason behind the students’ decision to cross the river remains unclear, prompting questions about safety measures and whether they had permission to use the canoe.

The Ghana Police Service and the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) are yet to release an official statement.

Officials have visited the scene to coordinate recovery efforts, and an investigation into the circumstances of the incident has begun.
