‘I uphold the values that only two genders exist as man and woman’ — Mahama

President John Dramani Mahama has reassured Ghanaians that his religious beliefs frown on the practice of LGBTQ+.

The President said his faith and values, as well as Ghana’s cultural beliefs, recognise only male and female as the two genders, and that marriage should be between a man and a woman.

Speaking during a fellowship with the clergy at the Accra International Conference Centre (AICC) on Friday, February 28, Mr. Mahama said he has initiated steps to reintroduce the expired anti-LGBTQ+ bill to Parliament.

“I, as a Christian, uphold the values that only two genders exist — man and woman — and that marriage is between a man and a woman. I have spoken with the Speaker so that a renewal of the expired Proper Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values Bill should be introduced by the government rather than as a private member’s motion.

“It is my hope that this consultation will result in the reintroduction of the Proper Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values Bill. I believe that my leadership should reflect the values and beliefs of the people I govern, and on this I stand firm,” the president said.

Meanwhile, the bill, which was passed unanimously by Parliament in 2024, could not receive presidential assent due to a court injunction barring then-President Akufo-Addo from acting on it.

Upon assuming office, President Mahama noted that the bill, per constitutional practice, had expired with the dissolution of the last Parliament.
