Special Prosecutor position fetches me droves of enemies daily — Kissi Agyabeng

Kissi Agyebeng, the Special Prosecutor, has disclosed that his position as the head of the nation’s premier anti-graft agency has made him enemies daily.

He said individuals cited for corruption-related offences are not ready to succumb to scrutiny, resulting in pushbacks and death threats.

He made this revelation while delivering a Constitution Day Public Lecture in Accra, organised by the One Ghana Movement in collaboration with the UPSA School of Law on Friday, February 28.

On his security, the anti-graft advocate further emphasized the difficulties and dangers of his work, describing the risk of his position as ultra-high.

“It fetches you droves of enemies daily, and it brings you into frontal contact with the lowest forms of debasement in humans. You do not go asking for it. It finds you. That is the nature of the job,” he stated.

He added that the nature of his position frequently puts him and his team in direct conflict with individuals determined to sabotage their work, sometimes resorting to sponsored attacks and negative publications.

“The pushback is reflected in so many forms, including the sponsorship of attacks and vile publications against the Special Prosecutor,” he revealed.

Mr. Agyebeng further stated that the threats go beyond verbal attacks and smear tactics as some people may not hesitate to physically hurt or take the life of those involved in the battle against corruption.

“Some of the enemies the job attracts would not hesitate to take a life should opportunity present itself. Thus, my security risk is ultra-high. Same applies to especially the operational officers of the Office of the Special Prosecutor,” he stressed.

The Special Prosecutor stated that the only thing that keeps him going despite these risks is the belief that his work would help create a society that is just and equitable for everyone.
