The Ghana brand is still strong, but the product has yet to match the brand – Prof. H. Kwasi Prempeh

Despite Ghana’s strong international reputation, its development continues to lag behind expectations, according to Prof. Kwasi H. Prempeh, Chairman of the Constitutional Review Committee and Director of CDD-Ghana.

Speaking at the 5th Annual Constitution Day Lecture organized by OneGhana Movement and the UPSA Law School at the Alisa Hotel on Friday, February 28, Prof. Prempeh expressed concern over the country’s stagnation despite the goodwill it has enjoyed since independence.

Comparing Ghana to its neighboring countries, he stated that the nation is “punching below its weight,” citing issues such as unreliable electricity supply and poor sanitation.

“The Ghana Brand is still strong, but the product has yet to match the brand. The product continues to fail. Many who visit our shores for the first time, attracted by the strength of the brand, increasingly go away disappointed,” he stated.

He emphasized that Ghana’s success in peaceful regime changes over the years has not translated into meaningful governance improvements for the majority of citizens. He warned of the growing frustration among the populace, who see political transitions benefiting only a small elite while the broader citizenry remains neglected.

“When citizens no longer believe that changing the baton makes a difference, they begin to despair. If the only ones seeing transformation in their lives are those who manage to enter the political class, then sooner than later, many will give up on democracy,” he stated.

Prof. Prempeh also supported the call by the Special Prosecutor, Kissi Agyebeng to enshrine the Office of the Special Prosecutor in Ghana’s constitution. He argued that granting constitutional backing to the office would strengthen its mandate and enhance its ability to fight corruption effectively.

The Constitution Day Lecture, an annual event, serves as a platform for critical discussions on Ghana’s governance and democratic progress. This year’s lecture highlighted the urgent need for accountability, institutional reforms, and a governance system that prioritizes the welfare of all Ghanaians.
