GPL players fake injuries to avoid intimidating venues – Christopher Nettey

Nations FC defender Christopher Nettey has revealed that some players in the Ghana Premier League deliberately fake injuries to avoid playing at certain venues due to intimidation and security concerns.

Speaking on the recent violence at Nsoatre, Nettey emphasized the need for a mindset shift among both players and supporters to curb hooliganism in Ghanaian football.

“A policeman once told me he wasn’t ready to work on a particular day, meaning if I got attacked, I could be beaten to death. I know some players who fake injuries to avoid certain venues, while others intentionally pick up cards to escape those fixtures due to intimidation,” Nettey told 3Sports.

He further referenced similar incidents in Elmina, questioning whether all stakeholders are truly ready to embrace change.

“The GFA can introduce safety protocols, but the real change must come from the supporters and the players themselves,” he added.

The Ghana Premier League is set to resume on March 7, following the final funeral rites of Nana Pooley on March 6.

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has also rolled out new safety measures to enhance security at all league venues.
