Bokankye D/A Primary and Junior High School in the Atwima Nwabiagya North Municipality of the Ashanti Region has been temporarily closed following gunshot by land guards over a disputed piece of land near the school.
On Thursday, February 27, 2025, teachers and school authorities at Bokankye Kindergarten, Primary, and Junior High School decided to shut down the school after gunshots were fired near the premises, causing fear and panic among students and staff.
Reports indicate that the incident stems from a disputed piece of land near the school, with two rival chiefs laying claim to it. One of the factions reportedly deployed land guards to assert control, leading to the violent incident.
School authorities and community leaders justified the temporary closure, citing the frequent gunfire that sometimes struck the roofs of school buildings causing fear and panic.
According to Richard Kwabena Boateng, the Unit Committee Vice Chairman of the area, a meeting was held on Monday, March 3, between school authorities, local leaders, and the District Police Commander where it was revealed that a court injunction had been secured, barring all parties from accessing the disputed land until the matter was resolved.
Richard Boateng further revealed that following deliberations, it has been agreed that the school would resume operations on Tuesday, March 4, under strict security measures.
“The district police commander has assured us that, they have been granted a court order that restrains people from going to the land till the Ashanti chief gives his final say on the issue. They have again assured us of full security and protection of the students so we should resume classes. Based on that we urge all parents to allow their children to come to school, and we promise to take good care of their children.”he revealed.
