Abednego Tetteh has announced his retirement at Heart of Lions following his harsh criticism of the Ghana Premier League (GPL).

The former Golden Boot winner, who previously starred for Bibiani Gold Stars, recently sparked controversy by calling for the cancellation of the 2024/25 GPL season. He accused the Ghana Football Association (GFA) of incompetence in managing the league.

His comments came in the wake of the league’s temporary suspension after the tragic death of Asante Kotoko supporter Francis Yaw Frimpong, known as ‘Nana Pooley,’ during a Week 19 fixture in Nsoatre. Although the league was halted, it is set to resume on March 7, with matchday 23 fixtures confirmed by the GFA.

In a post sighted on his social media page, the striker wrote” Please accept this letter as a formal notice of my retirement from Heart of Lions.

In response to Tetteh’s remarks, Hearts of Lions distanced themselves from his statements.

Tetteh made a major impact at Bibiani Gold Stars, winning the GPL Golden Boot with 16 goals in 19 matches. However, his second season with the Miners was underwhelming, as he managed just 9 appearances and a single goal under Coach Frimpong Manso.

Before his stint at Gold Stars, Tetteh played briefly for Faroe Islands club Hoyvik and Ghanaian side King Faisal. He first gained prom inence in 2016 with Bechem United, where he scored 13 goals and provided 5 assists in 23 league matches, playing a key role in their FA Cup triumph.

His time at Hearts of Oak was less successful, as he made just 5 appearances before mutually terminating his contract after 15 months with the club.
