Professor Agyeman Badu Akosa, a former Presidential aspirant of the CPP has called on Nkrumaists and members of the CPP to consider joining the National Democratic Congress (NDC), suggesting that it is currently the major political party that is closest to the Nkrumaist tradition.
Speaking in an interview with Talking Africa, Prof. Akosa lamented about the lack of impact by Nkrumaists in Ghanaian politics.
He stated, “This is where we are in national politics. I know that a lot of my contemporaries believe that we can come together. How long? I contested in 2007. 2007 to 2025 is 18 years. We’ve not made any jot on the political scene. So for how long? We continue till 25 years, 50 years?”
To justify his stance, he added: “I am saying, look, fortunately or unfortunately, Rawlings who, I believe, created the divide, having overthrown Limann’s government and being the maker of the National Democratic Congress(NDC) is no more. Hilla Limann is no more. All the icons of the Nkrumaist [tradition] are no more. The NDC today is the closest to an Nkrumaist tradition. Why don’t we support it to succeed?”
Prof Akosa described the last eight years of the previous NPP government as terrible. “We’ve had eight terrible years of the elephant in the room and if by dint of hard work, the elephant has been now, as my dear friend, Arthur Kennedy put it, sent into its domain, why are we coy to assist this government to succeed?” he stated.
He urges his colleague Nkrumahists to support the current NDC government to succeed in its mandate.
Prof. Akosa, who is an accomplished pathologist and a former director of Ghana’s Health service, made clear that his call is not motivated by any personal interests as he has survived on his own very well.
He said: “And, I am not saying this because I want any position. I have survived from 2007 to now quite well and I can continue to survive very well. But for any country that is not prepared to harvest its intellectual might, you are not going anywhere too soon.”
