CPP calls for support for President Mahama’s reset agenda

The Convention People’s Party (CPP), on the occasion of Ghana’s 68th Independence Day, has issued a call for national unity, reflection, and a renewed focus on the future progress of the nation.

As Ghanaians from all corners of the country, North, South, East, and West, to join together to celebrate this significant day, the CPP urges the nation to take stock of the progress made and to consider the path ahead.

This day is not only a reminder of our hard-earned independence but also of the party that led the nation to freedom and continues to hold the vision for Ghana’s prosperity, the statement reads.

It is glaringly obvious that the party which gained independence for our beloved country is also the party with the blueprint for the comprehensive prosperity and destiny of Ghana.

The CPP reflects on Ghana’s journey over the past 68 years, posing the critical question: “For how long will we continue to stray from the path that once set us on the road to greatness?”

In line with this reflection, the CPP acknowledges the policies adopted by the former government under former President Akufo-Addo, policies which draw on the vision of Nkrumah and the CPP.

These policies, including the Free Senior High School programme and other social initiatives, are grounded in the long-term development strategies pioneered by the CPP.

The CPP’s 7-year development plan, initiated in 1963, and the Accelerated Development Plan for Education of 1952, which made basic education free for all Ghanaians, remain cornerstones of the country’s advancement.

Furthermore, the CPP celebrates the recent recognition at the National Economic Dialogue, where it was acknowledged that the economic success of the 1st Republic, under CPP leadership, remains unmatched.

“The economic achievements of the 1st Republic set a high standard and should serve as a guide for the current government.” This statement is a testament to the lasting impact of CPP policies and a source of pride for the party.

The CPP also commends President John Dramani Mahama for his decision to scale down the 68th Independence Anniversary celebrations, resulting in a remarkable saving of GHS 13,500,000—90% less than the cost of previous celebrations.

This decision, part of the Reset Agenda, reflects the President’s commitment to good governance, fiscal responsibility, and prioritising the nation’s pressing needs over lavish displays.

The CPP has long advocated for national reflection during such important moments. As early as the 55th Independence Anniversary in 2012, the party called for a boycott of the celebrations, insisting that the country’s state of affairs needed to improve before full-scale celebrations could take place.

The CPP continued this call in 2023, urging the nation to reflect on its challenges. With this history in mind, the party wholeheartedly supports the decision to scale down this year’s celebrations as a means of prioritising national development.

The CPP calls on all Ghanaians, irrespective of political affiliation, to join President Mahama’s call for reflection, review, and reset.

“Together, we must build the economy we want, one that will benefit all Ghanaians, no matter their political views or backgrounds,” the statement reads.

On this momentous occasion, the CPP wishes all Ghanaians a peaceful and reflective Independence Anniversary, encouraging the nation to unite in building a prosperous future for all.
