Gov’t cuts Independence Day budget by 90% to save costs – Kwakye Ofosu

Government has cut the budget for the 68th Independence Day celebrations by 90%, reducing costs from GH₵15 million under the previous administration.

Minister of State in charge of Government Communication, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, explained that this year’s event, set for March 6 at Jubilee House, has been scaled down to just over 500 participants, compared to thousands in previous years.

“In the past, we had 60 contingents of 60 personnel each—about 3,600 participants. Now, we have reduced this to ensure lower costs,” he said.

Kwakye Ofosu confirmed that the new budget is only a tenth of last year’s, emphasizing that the scaled-down celebration does not diminish its importance.

“President Mahama believes Independence Day must be celebrated, but in a way that allows savings to be redirected to other essential areas,” he noted.

The move reflects the government’s commitment to fiscal responsibility while preserving the national event’s historical significance.
