The Member of Parliament (MP) for Sekyere Afram Plains, Nasira Afrah Gyekye, has assured her constituents of strategic measures to drive socio-economic development in the district.

Speaking at the 68th Independence Day celebration under the theme “Reflect, Review, and Reset,” she emphasized her commitment to improving agriculture, education, healthcare, and infrastructure in the predominantly rural district.

Gyekye, the first female MP for Sekyere Afram Plains, expressed gratitude to her constituents for entrusting her with the responsibility of leadership.

She acknowledged the district’s numerous challenges, including water scarcity, poor road networks, inadequate healthcare, and low educational outcomes, but reaffirmed her resolve to bring positive change.

“Here in the Sekyere Afram Plains District, we face unique challenges. Our district is the largest in the Ashanti Region by land size, yet it remains one of the poorest.

“This disparity is a stark reminder that our independence is not yet complete,” she stated.

She stressed the importance of agriculture as the backbone of the local economy and highlighted the need for modern farming techniques, improved access to markets, and better infrastructure to support farmers.

“True independence for our people means enhancing the livelihoods of farmers, ensuring quality education for our students, providing efficient healthcare, and improving road networks and electrification in all communities,” she said.

Gyekye assured constituents of collaborations with key stakeholders, government agencies, and development partners to address the district’s challenges.

“We must review our policies and strategies to ensure they are tailored to our unique needs. And we must reset our priorities to focus on sustainable development in agriculture, education, healthcare, and infrastructure.”

The MP called on residents to support development efforts and work together to transform the district.

“I believe in the Sekyere Afram Plains dream, where we will bequeath to our children a thriving and prosperous district. Let us turn the tides to our advantage and build a better future together,” she urged.

Sekyere Afram Plains is the largest district in the Ashanti Region by land size but remains one of the least developed.

With a predominantly agrarian economy, the area faces infrastructural deficits, limited access to quality healthcare, and underdeveloped educational facilities.

Successive governments have made efforts to improve conditions, but challenges persist.

Nasira Afrah Gyekye’s leadership marks a historic milestone as she becomes the first female MP for the district, raising hopes for a renewed focus on development and inclusivity.
