Ex-Black Stars midfielder Rabiu backs Ghana for 2026 World Cup qualification

Rabiu Mohammed, a former Black Stars midfielder, has expressed confidence in Ghana’s ability to secure a spot in the 2026 FIFA World Cup. However, he believes the team’s struggles stem from a lack of self-belief.

Ghana is set to face Chad and Madagascar in the upcoming World Cup qualifiers, with head coach Otto Addo naming a 23-man squad for the fixtures on March 21st and 24th, 2025.

Speaking to Akoma 87.9 FM, Rabiu pointed out that the squad’s current woes are rooted in a lack of confidence.

“This Black Stars team has lost trust in itself. They possess the talent and skills required at this level, but they lack belief. I know they are capable of performing better,” Rabiu stated.

“I hope their confidence returns soon, allowing them to secure victories. When the game starts, no matter how tough it gets, they should fight, run, and pass the ball. Their confidence will grow, enabling them to give their best for Ghana,” he added.

Rabiu, who represented Ghana in the 2014 World Cup, remains optimistic about the team’s qualification chances.

“Looking at the players we have now, they are talented. You can’t compare Comoros’ squad to Ghana’s. What the Black Stars need is self-belief and determination to fight for Ghana,” he concluded.

The Black Stars will assemble on March 17th to commence preparations for the qualifiers. Ghana currently sits second in Group I with nine points from four games and aims to strengthen their qualification bid with wins in the upcoming matches. The top team in the group will automatically secure a spot in the 2026 World Cup.
