Former Majority Leader and Member of Parliament Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu has revealed that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) was aware of its imminent defeat in the 2024 elections.
The veteran politician, who chaired the NPP’s manifesto committee, stated that if the elections had been held in August 2024, the party’s flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, would have secured only about 30% of the votes.
However, in the December 7 elections, Dr. Bawumia polled 4,877,611 votes (41.75%) against his main contender, John Mahama, who won with 6,591,790 votes (56.42%).
Speaking in an interview on Kumasi-based Nhyira FM, Mr. Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu said this was due to an improvement in economic conditions before the elections.
“I started seeing signs that the election would not be easy, but we still hoped for a better outcome. The fact that the elections were held in December allowed us to regain some support.
“If they had been conducted in August, Dr. Bawumia would have polled around 30% against John Mahama because, at that time, economic hardships were severe.
“However, conditions improved as we approached the elections, including the economic situation,” he said.
