Former Black Stars shot-stopper George Owu has named Adam Kwarasey as his top Ghanaian goalkeeper.

In an interview with 3Sports, Owu acknowledged the talent of legendary goalkeepers like Richard Kingston, Sammy Adjei, Philemon McCarthy, and Sanni Mohammed but ultimately chose Kwarasey as the standout.

Born in Norway, Kwarasey opted to represent Ghana, earning 24 caps between 2011 and 2016. He served as the Black Stars’ first-choice goalkeeper during the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations and started Ghana’s opening match against the USA at the 2014 FIFA World Cup.

Kwarasey enjoyed a successful club career, featuring for Strømsgodset, Portland Timbers, Rosenborg, and Brøndby.

George Owu himself served as Ghana’s goalkeeper at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens and played a pivotal role in the 2001 FIFA World Youth Championship, where Ghana clinched a silver medal after finishing as runners-up.

During the 2004 Olympics, Owu and the Ghanaian squad bowed out in the first round after finishing third in Group B. He made his debut for the senior national team on November 19, 2003, and was the second-choice goalkeeper at the 2006 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt.

Owu’s defining moment came during the 2006 FIFA World Cup qualifiers when he stepped in for the injured Sammy Adjei and Philemon McCarthy. His impressive performance and clean sheet helped Ghana secure a crucial 2-0 away victory against South Africa, paving the way for the Black Stars’ first-ever World Cup appearance.
