The Minority Leader in Parliament and Member of Parliament for Effutu, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has revealed some potential flagbearer contenders for the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP).
The lawmaker mentioned that former Vice President and 2024 flagbearer Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia will be seeking a return, while Kennedy Agyapong, who lost the contest in 2023, is expected to make a comeback.
Speaking on ‘The KSM Show’, Afenyo-Markin added that he has also heard of other possible contenders, including Abetifi MP Bryan Acheampong and former Education Minister Dr. Osei Yaw Adutwum.
“We hear names; the flagbearer for 2024 himself, Dr. Bawumia, is looking forward to returning. We’ve heard Kennedy Agyapong. We’ve heard Bryan Acheampong. We’ve heard Dr. Osei Yaw Adutwum. And I’m sure a couple of others will also come out,” he noted.
The conversation further delved into the NPP’s post-election activities, where the Minority Leader acknowledged the party’s reduced number of seats as challenging.
The party, which had expected to win the elections—or at least secure more seats in Parliament—now finds itself in a weaker position, holding only 88 seats against the NDC’s 187.
He further emphasized the need for internal restructuring, party rebranding, and revitalizing the party base, which explains his current posture in Parliament.
“As a Minority Leader, you must also lead the rebranding. Now, there is no party leader. We don’t have a flagbearer yet.
“So now, as a leader in Parliament, de facto, everything is on my shoulders. The party is looking at it, members in Parliament must activate themselves. I also see that I have a responsibility to lead the rebranding of the party,” he noted.
