The Member of Parliament (MP) for Salaga North constituency in the Savannah Region, Alhaji Alhassan Mumuni, has reaffirmed his commitment to promoting girls’ education in the constituency through sustained support for the KM Model Girls Junior High School, a school he initiated during his second term in Parliament before losing re-election in 2020.

The school, which was established in partnership with Ibis (now Oxfam), was founded to empower young girls through education and reduce the high dropout rates among female students in the constituency.

The MP stated that the school, which started with just seven students, now has an enrollment of over 100 girls pursuing junior high education.

Alhaji Mumuni’s dedication to development in Salaga North spans decades. He began his political career as an Assembly Member for 16 years, later serving as the District Chief Executive (DCE) for East Gonja from 2002 to 2009.

During his tenure as DCE, he led the campaign for the creation of Salaga North as a separate constituency, successfully petitioning the Electoral Commission to establish it in 2012.

He became the first MP for Salaga North in 2013, serving two terms before losing his seat in 2020.

As part of his ongoing efforts to support education, particularly for girls, the MP has introduced a bicycle support initiative to assist students who travel long distances to attend the KM Model Girls School.

“This year, I supported ten girls with bicycles to ease their daily commute. I plan to continue this initiative annually to ensure that distance is not a barrier to education,” he stated.

Despite the school’s progress, Alhaji Mumuni emphasised the urgent need for infrastructure expansion to accommodate more students and improve learning conditions.

He expressed his desire to relocate the school to a more spacious location and work towards its transformation into a senior high school (SHS) in the near future.

“The KM Model Girls School has the potential to grow into a fully-fledged girls’ SHS, providing a safe learning environment for young girls. This will encourage more parents to enroll their daughters in school and reduce early marriages,” he stated.

Alhaji Mumuni urged government agencies, NGOs, and development partners to collaborate in providing additional classrooms, dormitories, and learning materials to strengthen the school’s capacity.

He reiterated his commitment to empowering young girls through quality education, stating that investing in female education is key to improving household livelihoods and community development.
