Minister for Energy and Green Transitions, John Abdulai Jinapor, has announced plans to launch a criminal investigation into the disappearance of over 1,300 Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) containers at the Tema Harbour.
In a Facebook post on Thursday, March 26, Jinapor shared details from an investigative report on the matter, highlighting inconsistencies in the figures provided by the previous administration.
During the transition process, the outgoing NPP government had disclosed that approximately 3,000 ECG containers were held at the Tema Harbour due to clearance delays. However, upon assuming office and inspecting the port, Jinapor was informed that only 2,500 containers remained, with an accumulated demurrage cost of GHS 1.5 billion.
This discrepancy prompted the Minister to commission an investigative committee to uncover the truth.
“The committee’s report, which was presented to me, confirmed that over 1,300 containers were indeed missing—contrary to the narrative given by the previous administration,” Jinapor revealed.
Describing the findings as alarming, he stressed the need for immediate action.
“Criminal investigations will be launched immediately, and the perpetrators will surely be prosecuted,” he declared.
The revelation has sparked concerns over transparency and procurement practices within the ECG, as the government moves to hold those responsible accountable.
