A survivor of Thursday’s fatal accident which occurred on the Adukrom-Aseseeso Road in the Okere District of the Eastern Region has shared a chilling account of the circumstances surrounding the tragedy.

What was intended to be an exciting excursion for pupils of the Ben Kunadu SDA Basic School in Asante Akyem in the Ashanti Region and some parents and teachers to the Akosombo Dam in the Eastern Region, turned tragic when the bus, registered as GV 83-22 and belonging to Collins Senior High School in Asante Agogo, which was transporting the 63 occupants, overturned while descending the mountainous Akuapem enclave after the driver lost control of the wheel.

A 14-year-old pupil of the school and a 51-year-old parent, both yet to be identified, perished in the accident on the spot.

Fourty one (41) of the victims including the two deceased were rushed to the Yilo Krobo District Hospital with the rest being sent to the Tetteh Quarshie Memorial Hospital at Akuapem-Mampong.

Narrating their ordeal to GhanaWeb’s Eastern Regional Correspondent, Michael Oberteye, on his hospital bed hours after the incident, a tutor at the school, Atsuvi Mawulor, popularly known as Sir Atsu, said the driver lost control of the wheel while meandering his way through the curvy mountains.

“We arranged for a trip to Akosombo, so on our way, we had that accident, we were descending the mountain and there was a sharp curve, that was when the driver realized that the curve was so sharp so he couldn’t control it and he landed in the gutter,” he recounted.

Describing the injuries sustained by himself and some occupants, he furthered, “When the accident happened I was able to get out and one of my co-teachers also got injured and we helped him to use a scarf to bandage his hand and then some of them had a cut on the head, very severe and others, minor injuries.”

The unexpected incident, the tutor added, has traumatized them a lot but added that they were hopeful of assurances from the hospital staff that their conditions would improve in the next few days.

Medical Superintendent at the Yilo Krobo District Hospital, Dr. Francesca Mensah Darkwah said 30 of the victims were treated for minor injuries and discharged, furthering that two cases had been referred to the Eastern Regional Hospital.

“Two of them had fractures which requires advanced care so we ended up referring them to the regional hospital but the rest had some abrasions and minor injuries,” she said.

The Eastern Regional Minister, As well as Regional Director of Health and the Yilo Krobo Municipal Director of Education were at the facility to commiserate with the victims and provide the necessary care and assistance for the victims.
