The former Assin Central MP, Kennedy Agyapong, has reassured his supporters that his $18 million defamation loss to investigative journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas is nothing to worry about.

Arriving in Ghana to a grand welcome at Kotoka International Airport on March 27, Agyapong addressed the media and his supporters, emphasising that his ordeal is part of the price one pays for speaking the truth and standing up for the voiceless.

“We should all stay calm. Nobody should worry because anybody who decides to speak the truth and speak for the voiceless will go through this ordeal,” he stated confidently.

Agyapong added that the legal battle had only strengthened his resolve. “Through this ordeal, I have become a better person to fight and defend the country of the voiceless.”

He also expressed gratitude for the massive support shown to him and his wife upon their return. “I use this opportunity to thank you for the wonderful welcome that you have given to me and my wife. Thank you very much. This would inspire me to continue to do whatever I am doing.”

Background

Anas Aremeyaw Anas filed a defamation lawsuit against Kennedy Agyapong in Essex County, New Jersey, after the former MP made allegations against him in a 2021 interview.

Agyapong had accused Anas of being a criminal and a thief and linked him to the murder of fellow journalist Ahmed Hussein-Suale.

The US court ruled in favour of Anas, awarding $18 million in damages, including $5 million in presumed damages, $5 million in actual damages, and $8 million in punitive damages.
