President John Dramani Mahama has called for responsible driving and riding as Muslims celebrate the end of the holy month of Ramadan.
The President expressed concern over the reckless riding and driving often exhibited by young people during the Eid festivities, which frequently result in road crashes and loss of lives.
Speaking at a grand durbar to mark Eid Al-Fitr at the Independence Square in Accra on Monday, March 31, he emphasized that no life should be lost during the celebrations.
“Eid Al-Fitr should be observed with peace and dignity. Unfortunately, in the past, reckless riding and driving have led to unfortunate losses of life. No one must die in the celebration of Eid Al-Fitr. No one must die at the end of the holy month of Ramadan,” he stressed.
President Mahama further announced that he has directed the Ghana Police Service to arrest individuals found driving or riding recklessly.
“I want to caution our young people who drive their cars recklessly and ride their motorbikes dangerously. I’ve asked the police to look out for you, and if you ride or drive recklessly, they will arrest you,” he warned.
The President also called on residents of Bawku in the Upper East Region to embrace peace and unity.
“My brothers and sisters, let us work together, guided by the principles of faith, justice, and compassion, to create a brighter future for ourselves and future generations. May Allah bless our nation and guide us on the path of peace and prosperity.
“And on this day, I want to take the opportunity once again to call on our brothers and sisters in Bawku to give peace a chance on this holy occasion as we celebrate the feast of Eid Al-Fitr,” he appealed.
