The New York-based Dangme Diaspora Development Trust Incorporated has donated many academic and educational books to the University of Environment and Sustainable Development (UESD) located at Somanya in the Eastern Region.

The books cover diverse disciplines, including microbiology, organic chemistry, public health, biotechnology, mathematics, etc.

They also presented 300 pieces of syringes to the sick bay of the university.

Presenting the books at a brief ceremony on Thursday, March 28, 2025, Opae Tetteh, who made the presentation on behalf of the donors, said he was hopeful that the books would go a long way to complement reading and learning materials at the UESD, as well as the sick bay.

The books, he said, would serve as reference materials for the students and assured the management of the university of more such gestures in the future.

The Executive Director underscored the need for stakeholders in the Krobo area to collaborate with the school to ensure its development.

“We’re excited about this school cited in the Dangme community, it’s our responsibility to work together with the school for the university to grow,” he stated.

Going forward, Tetteh, while stating that the gesture would pave the way for the extension of further support for the school, added that the group would, in the future, consult the University management in assessing its needs to inform its area of support.

According to him, part of the group’s plan for the university is to put up an SRC complex to ensure the effective administration of the student leadership.

He urged the students to make good use of the books by upgrading their knowledge and widening their horizons to achieve academic credentials.

Mary Abena Agyepong, Registrar of the UESD, who received the books on behalf of the University Vice Chancellor and the University community, thanked the team for their generosity, adding that the books will deepen academic work in the university by giving students new perspectives on their studies.

Speaking to the press after the presentation, she underscored the importance of books to the smooth running of such institutions for both academic and accreditation purposes, as well as reference points.

“When you talk of University, books are very important in the work that we do; certain books are required for accreditation purposes for the training of the students… and serve as reference books for our students,” she said.

Though the university runs an e-book library, Agyepong said hard-copy books were still required.

She, on behalf of the Vice Chancellor, extended the appreciation of the University body to the donors and urged the students to put the books to responsible use to enhance their knowledge.

SRC President for the UESD, Jennifer Teiko Larbi, citing the relevance of the books to the academic pursuits of the students, said further support from stakeholders for the university would be highly appreciated to meet the needs of the rising student population.

“We need a lot of these books; we even need those that we can have access to digitally,” she said while appealing to the larger community to contribute their quota to the progress of the institution.
