Gomoa West District Health Directorate laments over inadequate medical equipment, others to provide quality healthcare

The Gomoa West District Director of the Ghana Health Service, Dr. Maxwell Yeboah Kyereh, has stated that inadequate medical equipment and other challenges are hampering effective healthcare delivery in the district.

Speaking at the First General State Council Meeting of the Gomoa Ajumako Traditional Council held recently at Gomoa Ajumako, Dr. Yeboah Kyereh presented the current state of health facilities in the district to Nananom.

According to him, while the Gomoa West District Directorate of the Ghana Health Service has the necessary facilities to provide quality healthcare, the lack of essential medical equipment is affecting the productivity of health workers.

He also highlighted other challenges, including staff shortages, inadequate adolescent and maternal health outcomes, and a lack of staff accommodation.

Further issues include insufficient funding for planned activities, security concerns such as petty theft at some facilities, land encroachment on properties belonging to health centers, and poor road conditions, which delay emergency response times.

“Nananom, it is important to note that Gomoa West District has one hospital at Apam, the district capital, one polyclinic at Gomoa Dawurampong, six health centers, 30 CHPS compounds, one Reproductive and Child Health Unit, and one private clinic across its seven sub-districts.

“This clearly indicates that if the above challenges are addressed, the Gomoa West Health Directorate can significantly improve healthcare services in the district,” he stated.

Dr. Yeboah Kyereh appealed to the President of the Gomoa Ajumako Traditional Council, Obrempong Nyanful Krampah XI, and Nananom to support efforts to draw the attention of President John Dramani Mahama and the Minister for Health, Hon. Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, to the district’s healthcare needs.

On the recent cholera outbreak in the Central Region, Mr. Benjamin Christian Odjoh-Safo, the Gomoa West District Disease Control Officer, reported that the situation was under control, with only a few cases that posed no serious threat to affected patients.

He urged residents to maintain clean surroundings to prevent the spread of environmental-related diseases.

Obrempong Nyanful Krampah XI, Omanhene of the Gomoa Ajumako Traditional Area, commended the Gomoa West District Directorate of the Ghana Health Service for its efforts in improving healthcare. He emphasized that a healthy population leads to a prosperous nation.

He reaffirmed his commitment to ensuring that the challenges raised are addressed, stating, “I believe we will soon hear good news from the Ministry of Health regarding the provision of essential medical equipment and solutions to staff and accommodation shortages.”

He also called on security agencies, including the Police and National Investigation Bureau (NIB), to intensify efforts to curb petty theft and land encroachment at healthcare facilities.
