A new poll by independent research firm Global InfoAnalytics has revealed that 17% of voters who initially intended to vote for Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia in the 2024 general elections changed their minds on election day.
The April 2025 National Tracking Poll also noted that the NPP flagbearer lost ground in the weeks leading up to the elections.
“The poll also sought to explain why H.E John Mahama won the election by a landslide. The data suggests that Dr. Bawumia lost ground to John Mahama in the final weeks and days of the campaign,” the report, published on Wednesday, April 2, stated.
“The poll shows that only 83% of voters who had intended to vote for him actually did so on election day. Nearly 14% switched their votes to Mahama on the day, according to polling data, while 3% broke away for other candidates.”
The survey, which sampled 7,915 respondents using the 2024 voters’ register as the frame, also assessed who Ghanaians believe is responsible for the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) defeat.
According to the findings, former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo is considered the main factor in the party’s electoral loss.
Closely following Akufo-Addo in blame is his cousin and former Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta, alongside Dr. Bawumia, his running mate Dr. Mathew Opoku-Prempeh, and former Assin Central MP Kennedy Agyapong.
“On the question of who should be blamed for NPP’s defeat in the 2024 general election, 68% of voters who responded to the question blame President Nana Akufo-Addo, 40% blame Hon. Ofori-Atta, 37% blame Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, 33% blame Dr. Mathew Opoku-Prempeh, 32% blame other government appointees, 25% blame the MPs, and only 9% blame Kennedy Agyapong,” the report stated.
Meanwhile, the poll found that unlike in October 2024, 64% of voters now believe the country is heading in the right direction under President John Dramani Mahama.
