We will win 2028 elections if we unite — Kennedy Agyapong to NPP members

Former New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer contender, Kennedy Agyapong, has called for unity within the opposition party as it seeks to rebuild after its defeat in the 2024 elections.

The NPP, which had been confident of breaking the eight-year governance cycle since 1992, lost the presidential election by a margin of about 1.7 million votes to President John Dramani Mahama of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

The party, which went into the polls with 137 seats, secured only 88 out of 276 parliamentary seats.

In a social media post on Friday, April 4, the former Assin Central Member of Parliament acknowledged that the party’s reorganization efforts would not be without challenges.

However, Mr. Agyapong expressed confidence that with unity, the party could regroup and win the 2028 general elections against the ruling NDC.

“The NPP has faced challenges in the past, and we will face challenges again. But it is in those moments of adversity that we must remind ourselves of who we are: a party of resilience, a party of vision, and a party that will always put the people first. The road to 2028 is tough, but we will travel it together and we will succeed,” he wrote.

Meanwhile, addressing NPP members at a Minority retreat in Kwahu in the Eastern Region, the party’s 2024 flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, admitted that internal divisions contributed to the electoral defeat.

“What we need most at this point is unity. During the run-up to the last election, we were too vicious against each other internally. Later, this division became part of the arsenal our opponents used against us,” said the former Vice President.
