Energy Minister requests NIB investigation into 1,357 missing ECG containers

The Minister of Energy, John Jinapor, has formally requested the National Investigation Bureau (NIB) to probe the disappearance of 1,357 containers belonging to the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG).

An investigative report uncovered the missing containers, revealing that ECG had reported 2,491 uncleared containers at Tema Port, but only 1,134 were accounted for, leaving 1,357 untraceable.

The report also highlighted procurement breaches, including the awarding of contracts to a company that lacked the necessary license to clear the containers.

In a letter dated April 2 and addressed to the Director-General of the NIB, the Energy Minister wrote in full: “I refer to the attached report of the Technical Committee constituted (‘the Committee’) by the Ministry of Energy and Green Transition to investigate the status of the estimated two thousand five hundred (2,500) containers of ECG at Tema Port.

“The committee’s final investigation revealed that one thousand three hundred and fifty-seven (1,357) of these containers could not be accounted for and are allegedly missing.

“In view of the foregoing, the Ministry kindly requests your outfit to commence investigations into the missing containers and furnish the Ministry with your findings.”

Meanwhile, the Energy Minister has revealed that the diversion started way back in 2019. He has vowed to do anything possible to bring the perpetrators to face justice and rerieve the missing containers.
