Former Asante Kotoko and Black Stars assistant coach Maxwell Konadu has shared insights into his time in South Africa, describing his brief stint with Black Leopards as a valuable learning experience.
After coaching Ghana Premier League sides Kotoko, Legon Cities, and Nsoatreman FC, whom he guided to the MTN FA Cup title, Konadu took a leap abroad, signing a three-year contract with Black Leopards in July 2024. However, his time there was cut short after just 17 games.
Speaking to Akoma FM, Konadu revealed why he accepted the challenge after previously turning down offers from South African clubs.
“I had an opportunity two years ago, but things didn’t work out. So I chose to stay and coach Nsoatreman. A year later, Black Leopards approached me again, and I decided to take on the challenge, not for the financial incentives but to explore the South African market and their style of play. It was a great learning experience, and I consider it a success.”
Despite a promising start that saw his team rise to second place, Black Leopards struggled with inconsistency. Konadu managed just six wins in 17 matches, ultimately deciding to part ways with the club.
“We started the season well, worked extremely hard, and at one point, we were second on the table. But after drawing three consecutive home games, doubts began to creep in. Management grew impatient, and we mutually agreed to part ways. I left on good terms, and I believe it was the best decision for both parties.”
Now back in Ghana, Konadu is weighing his next move but remains in no rush.
“I’ve had conversations with teams outside Ghana, but with the season ending soon, I prefer to wait and make the right choice. Some clubs have reached out, but I want to take my time before deciding my next step.”
With the 2024/25 Ghana Premier League season nearing its conclusion, Konadu could soon be back on the sidelines, whether in Ghana or beyond.
