The Institute for Democratic Governance (IDEG) presented its memorandum on proposals for constitutional amendments and institutional reforms to the Constitution Review Committee (CRC) during a meeting in Accra on Friday.
IDEG’s memorandum focuses on reforms in local governance, political parties, public service, and public enterprise. Dr. Emmanuel Akwetey, the Executive Director of IDEG, and Prof. Kwesi Jonah, a Senior Research Fellow at the Institute, delivered the memorandum to the CRC.
Prof. Kwesi Prempeh, the Chairman of the CRC, received the memorandum and commended IDEG for its ongoing efforts in research, advocacy, policy development, good governance, and the promotion of healthy democratic practices over the years. He expressed gratitude for IDEG’s participation and contributions to the CRC’s work and the constitutional amendment process.
The CRC is currently engaging with citizens, institutions, and organizations to gather their views and recommendations for amendments to Ghana’s 1992 Constitution.
In fulfillment of his campaign promise, President John Dramani Mahama established the CRC in January to oversee the constitution review process. The committee has a six-month timeline to submit its recommendations to the government. It aims to identify and address the gaps and challenges related to the implementation of previous constitution review efforts, including those conducted by the 2010 Constitution Review Commission and the 2023 Constitution Review Consultative Committee.
