Kusaug residents demand action from President Mahama over escalating Bawku conflict

Residents of the Kusaug Traditional Area in the Upper East Region have voiced deep concern over the ongoing violence in Bawku, expressing disappointment over what they see as President John Mahama’s failure to deliver on his campaign promise to resolve the conflict.

Speaking at a press conference, the group referenced commitments made by President Mahama during the election season, where he pledged to bring lasting peace to the troubled area. However, they lamented that instead of calm, the situation has deteriorated significantly under his administration.

“Mr President, when we heard your promise to bring a lasting solution to the Bawku conflict, we were overwhelmed by it and thought the NDC was our saviour.

“That was why Kusaug’s gave the NPP zero and voted massively for the NDC.”

The residents, clearly distressed by the increasing violence, pointed to the human toll of the conflict since Mahama assumed office.

“Your Excellency, the President, did you know that since your assumption of office as President, more than 18 people have been killed in this Bawku conflict, including women and children.

“Is that what you want Mr President?”
The group also recalled the President’s recognition of the traditional leadership in the area, and questioned why decisive action has not yet followed.

“Mr President, you indeed mentioned the truth that the overlord Naana Asigri Azorka II is the legitimate chief of Kusaug, and everyone knows that. Now, what has changed, Mr. President? We didn’t know it would take you so long to solve the Bawku issue when we voted you into power,” they stated.

Frustrated by the lack of progress, the group urged President Mahama to act immediately on his promise. They called for the arrest of a rival chief and a public reaffirmation of the authority of the Bawku Naaba to help restore order.

“Mr President, your promise to Kusaug must be fulfilled immediately without delay to prevent further escalation of tension in the Bawku area,” the group stated.
