Communications Director for the 2024 NPP flagbearer campaign, Miracles Aboagye, has taken a swipe at the NDC government over its handling of the fight against illegal mining, known locally as galamsey.
According to him, the ruling NDC deceived Ghanaians with lofty promises to tackle galamsey while in opposition, but is now backtracking after assuming power.
“These guys scammed an entire country,” he wrote in a social media post, reacting to a statement by Minister of Government Communications Felix Kwakye Ofosu, who recently described the galamsey fight as a lifelong battle.
Mr Aboagye also referenced a previous comment by Mr Kwakye Ofosu, in which he urged Ghanaians to vote against Dr Mahamudu Bawumia and the NPP if they wanted a genuine fight against galamsey.
“The only reason why it persists is that major figures in the NPP and government are actively involved in it, and as we have heard Prof Frimpong-Boateng say on tape, it is a major source of financing for the NPP. They will simply not fight,” Kwakye Ofosu had said in an earlier tweet.
Meanwhile, Mr Kwakye Ofosu is arguing that the fight against illegal mining should be a continuous national effort rather than one tied to specific timelines.
He emphasized the need for constant vigilance, noting that people will always seek to engage in illegal activities such as galamsey.
Speaking in an interview on Accra-based Channel One TV on Tuesday, April 8, he stated that what matters most is for government to demonstrate clear commitment by consistently taking action against offenders.
