The Ashanti Regional Parliamentary Caucus of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has assured traders affected by the devastating Adum market fire in Kumasi of their continued support until a new market building is fully constructed.
This commitment was made alongside a GHS 150,000 donation to the fire victims during an inspection of the site on Friday, March 21, 2025.
Hon. Kofi Amankwaa Manu, former Minister for Defense and current MP for Atwima Kwanwoma Constituency, led the NPP caucus in expressing their condolences and offering support to the traders who suffered immense losses in the fire.
Addressing the media and traders at the scene, Hon. Amankwaa Manu emphasized the NPP MPs’ dedication to standing with them through this challenging time, stating that the donation was only the initial step. “We will continue to support you throughout this process,” he affirmed, “We know the pain you are going through.
We are here not just to give you immediate help, but to show our solidarity and commitment to helping you rebuild your businesses.”
The fire, which occurred on March 21, destroyed over 1,000 shops, resulting in millions of Ghanaian cedis in losses.
Hon. Lawyer Obiri Yeboah, MP for Subin, had previously informed Parliament about the incident, urging swift action to aid the victims.
Hon. Yeboah highlighted the significance of collaborative community efforts to rebuild the market, encouraging traders to unite, supported by the NPP and the wider community, to ensure a rapid return to operations. “We will rally together and support you in every way possible,” he said. “This fire has not only affected you individually, but it has also impacted the entire community. We are all in this together.”
The GHS 150,000 donation is intended to assist traders with immediate needs like replacing goods. The MPs pledged further assistance as the recovery progresses.
Bernard Antwi Bosiako, Ashanti Regional Chairman of the NPP, also known as Chairman Wontumi, urged former President John Dramani Mahama to extend similar support to the Adum fire victims as he did following the Kantamanto fire disaster in 2017.
Chairman Wontumi stated, “We urge President Mahama to consider offering the same level of support to the traders here in Adum as he did in Kantamanto. The people of this region need help, and together, we can rebuild.”
The generous donation and ongoing commitment from the Ashanti NPP MPs have provided hope to the affected traders, as they look toward rebuilding their businesses and resuming their livelihoods.
The combined efforts of political leaders, traders, and the broader community aim to ensure the Adum market not only recovers but emerges stronger, continuing its contribution to the economic vitality of Kumasi and the Ashanti Region.
