Kwame Dadzie: Comedy shows with obscene content should be rated

If you have ever attended a comedy show where comedians took turns to deliver materials riddled with risqué content, while you were with a minor, this article will tickle your fancy.

One day, after a very popular comedy event, a friend of mine who attended the show called and registered his displeasure about the vulgar words that ran through some of the presentations. He told me about how uncomfortable he was seeing the show with his fourteen-year-old son.

His complaint rekindled the thought of an observation I had made out of my personal experience with these comedy shows. I love comedy. I have attended a lot of the live stand-up comedy events in Ghana, and in most times done reports or reviews of them. However, some of them need to pay attention to their materials.

In our attempt to creatively explore various aspects of our life, we need to know that we live in a society that has norms and values. You can’t just say anything in the name of comedy. You always need to be conscious of your environment.

I don’t have an issue with comedians performing lewd content to adults, but when children are in attendance, it becomes a bit problematic. Adult programmes should not be attended by children.

It is about time comedy show producers and organisers announced when advertising these shows, if they have x-rated language. Once parents know this, they will not take their kids to such comedy events.

In the April 5, 2025 edition of my SAY IT LOUD segment on Joy FM’s Showbiz A-Z, I raised this particular issue. Watch below:
