22 arrested in illegal mining crackdown in Western Region

A coordinated operation by the Western Central Police Command has led to the arrest of 22 individuals suspected of engaging in illegal mining activities across several communities in the Western Region, notably Dominase Nkwanta and Adjakaa Manso.

The arrests, carried out on April 8, 2025, followed an intelligence-driven effort to clamp down on the widespread menace of illegal mining, commonly known as “galamsey,” which continues to pose a serious threat to Ghana’s environment and water bodies.

Speaking to journalists, the Deputy Western Central Regional Police Commander, ACP Bismark Agyapong, provided details on the suspects, who range in age from 19 to 30 years. Among those apprehended are Albert Adu Bonsra, Stephen Kwakye, Richard Atigah, Yaw Menanyi, Al-Mustapha Alidu, and several others believed to be actively involved in illicit mining operations in the area.

During the swoop, police recovered a range of tools suspected to have been used for the illegal activities. Seized items included 11 pumping machines, seven shovels, a pick-axe, and two chamfan machines—equipment typically associated with unauthorized gold mining.

Following their arrest, the suspects were promptly arraigned before the Asankrangwa District Court, where they were remanded to assist with further investigations. ACP Agyapong noted that the case file would be sent to the Attorney-General’s Department for review and subsequent legal action.

He also issued a stern warning to others involved in illegal mining, urging them to cease such operations immediately. “Anyone caught will face the full rigours of the law,” he warned, reaffirming the government’s determination to eradicate illegal mining from the country.

As the crackdown continues, authorities are calling on the public to support ongoing efforts to preserve the environment and protect Ghana’s natural resources from further degradation.
