Yamfo murder: Youth calls for unbias investigation, justice for 30-year-old nurse

Residents of Yamfo in the Ahafo region have enjoined the police administration to conduct an unbiased investigation into the suspected murder of a 30-year-old Richard Antwi Agyei, a nurse at the Yamfo Health Centre.

Another resident sustained a very serious injury after he was allegedly shot by the military during a shooting spree to disperse agitated residents. He is on admission at the Sunyani regional hospital.

Nana Gyamfi Kumanini, the leader of the Yamfo Youth Association (YYA), told JoyNews that tension erupted after police officers from Duayaw-Nkwanta raided locations known for Indian hemp smoking and trading in the community.

The accused police officers allegedly assaulted Richard Agyei, who was arrested at one of the sites and was later pronounced dead at the Yamfo Health Centre.

The incident occurred on Friday, April 4, after a group of irate youth besieged the Yamfo Police Station, where the accused officers from Duayaw-Nkwanta took refuge after some angry residents decided to attack them and attempted to set the charge office ablaze to express their displeasure.

The officers of the Ghana Armed Forces in the Ahafo region responded swiftly, firing intermittent warning shots to disperse the crowd and prevent the situation from escalating further.

Speaking to JoyNews’ Ahafo regional correspondent, Emmanuel Adu Gyamfi, the youth Leader commended the Ahafo regional police and the GAF for containing the situation, thereby calming the tension.

He has therefore appealed to the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Christian Tetteh Yohuno and the police administration to expedite action to bring the perpetrators to book, saying that “no one should be above the laws of the land”.

Nana Gyamfi Kumanini Ameyaw cautioned against shielding the actual officers among the police team allegedly from Duayaw-Nkwanta who are responsible for the act, warning that this could regenerate anger among the youth.

The Youth Leader later admonished residents of the community, especially young persons, to calm down and allow the responsible law enforcement agencies in the country to conduct an independent, transparent and unbiased investigation.

Meanwhile, the Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) James Annor, the Ahafo Regional Police Commander, has assured the general public, especially residents of Yamfo, that the matter would be investigated for justice to prevail.
