MTN uses Ashanti Konnect Music Festival to tackle MoMo fraud

The MTN-sponsored Ashanti Konnect Music Festival not only thrilled attendees with electrifying music but also served as a platform to educate the public on how to guard against Mobile Money (MoMo) fraud.

The festival featured energetic performances from top gospel and secular artists, including Brother Sammy, Jack Alolome, Daughters of Glorious Jesus, Tagoe Sisters, Okyeame Kwame, and Strongman. However, a standout feature of the event was a nearly 45-minute theatrical performance by a drama troupe from the Kumasi Cultural Centre, creatively addressing the issue of MoMo fraud.

In addition, a powerful video message from Godwin Kwami Tamakloe, Senior Manager at the Anti-Money Laundering, Fraud, Compliance, and Risk Unit of MTN Ghana, was screened on a giant display. The message offered essential tips on identifying and avoiding fraud, emphasizing MTN’s commitment to protecting its users.

This initiative is part of the telecom giant’s broader strategy to combat rising fraud cases on its network and empower subscribers with knowledge to detect, prevent, and report suspicious activity.

During the festival’s opening segment at Rattray Park in Kumasi on Saturday, April 19, 2025, Godwin Tamakloe urged the enthusiastic crowd to avoid sharing their MoMo PINs under any circumstances.

He further advised against using easily guessed numbers—such as birthdates—for PINs, cautioning that such information is often exploited by fraudsters.

“Such callers are fraudsters,” he warned, referring to individuals who make demands via phone calls not originating from MTN’s official contact numbers.

On the topic of online transactions, Tamakloe emphasized that subscribers should always verify that the business name displayed matches that of the recipient company. He noted that adhering to these precautions can significantly reduce the risk of falling victim to sophisticated scams.

A Festival of Music and Messages
The 2025 Ashanti Konnect Music Festival drew a large and diverse crowd, including the Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr. Frank Amoakohene, officials from the Ashanti Regional Coordinating Council (ARCC), and Kwame Owusu Fordjour—popularly known as “Dr. UN,” founder of the controversial Global Blueprint Excellence Awards. Members of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) and other dignitaries were also in attendance.

The atmosphere reached a fever pitch when Dr. Amoakohene took to the stage and danced energetically as gospel star Jack Alolome performed his hit songs, further lifting the spirits of the already enthusiastic crowd.

Through music, drama, and direct messaging, MTN Ghana seamlessly blended entertainment with awareness, ensuring that attendees left both inspired and informed.
