Slovenia backs Moroccan autonomy plan as solid basis for Sahara solution

Slovenia has reaffirmed its support for Morocco’s 2007 autonomy plan, describing it as a solid basis for resolving the regional dispute over the Moroccan Sahara.

At a press conference in Ljubljana on Friday, Slovenia’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign and European Affairs, Tanja Fajon, said her country values Morocco’s serious and credible efforts toward a lasting solution.

Fajon made the remarks following talks with Morocco’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccan Expatriates, Nasser Bourita, who is on an official visit to Slovenia.

The Slovenian minister’s statement echoes her country’s stance in the June 11, 2024, Joint Declaration, issued during her visit to Rabat.

That declaration marked a new phase in Morocco-Slovenia relations and formally outlined Slovenia’s support for Morocco’s position on the Sahara.

The two ministers stressed the United Nations’ exclusive role in the political process and backed all relevant UN Security Council resolutions, including Resolution 2756 (2024).

Fajon reiterated Slovenia’s long-standing support for a UN-led solution that is just, lasting, and mutually acceptable, based on compromise.

Both countries also expressed continued support for the efforts of the UN Secretary-General and his Personal Envoy to push the political process forward.

They reaffirmed their commitment to MINURSO’s mission in the region.
