Asante Kotoko are on the verge of naming Abdul Karim Zito, current head coach of Dreams FC, as the new man to lead the Porcupine Warriors.
This comes in the wake of Prosper Narteh Ogum‘s departure on April 21, following a string of disappointing results in the ongoing Ghana Premier League season.
Karim Zito’s return marks a homecoming, having previously served the club both as a player part of the historic 1983 CAF Champions League-winning squad and as a coach.
A seasoned tactician, Zito recently made headlines by guiding Dreams FC to the semi-finals of the 2023/24 CAF Confederation Cup, and also clinching the MTN FA Cup in the same season. His experience and tactical acumen are seen as key to reviving Kotoko’s campaign.
Ogum, who delivered Kotoko’s first league title in years during the 2021/22 season, could not replicate that success in his second spell. Under his guidance this season, Kotoko recorded 13 wins, 8 draws, and 7 losses in 28 games—scoring 28 and conceding 21, with an average of 1.68 points per match.
Back-to-back defeats to Accra Lions and Nations FC ultimately sealed his fate, as pressure mounted over the team’s inconsistent form.
Karim Zito’s expected appointment is seen as a bold move by Kotoko’s management, who remain focused on their ambitions of a strong finish in both the league and the FA Cup.
