Kofi Asare, Executive Director of the African Education Watch (EduWatch), has waded into the controversy surrounding the suspension of the Chief Justice of the Republic, Her Ladyship Gertrude Esaaba Torkonoo.
President John Dramani Mahama on Tuesday directed the suspension with immediate effect, pending the outcome of a five-member committee inquiry into three separate petitions seeking the CJ’s removal from office.
Following the decision, the Minority in Parliament described the move as politically motivated and called on the President to reverse what they termed a judicial coup.
The NDC, on the other hand—particularly its National Communications Officer, Sammy Gyamfi—praised the President for what he described as fidelity to the Constitution and the rule of law.
Reacting to the development in a social media post on Wednesday, April 23, the social commentator highlighted how some of today’s critics were defenders during former President Akufo-Addo’s 2018 dismissal of then Electoral Commission Chair, Charlotte Osei—and vice versa.
“When Charlotte was removed on 28th June 2018, my people [the NPP] happily defended NADAA’s decision.
“NPP’s Gabby said NADAA had no option but to respond to the constitutional mandate, its processes, the facts, and the truth,” he wrote.
He continued, “Dr. Mustapha Hamid cautioned against any attempt to politicise the EC Chair’s removal since it was in line with the Constitution.”
According to Kofi Asare, the NDC’s National Organiser at the time, Kofi Adams, also held a press conference, stating that Ghana’s democracy and independent institutions were under attack.
“Today, similar event, same script, different actors, different roles.
Our people are very good actors,” he noted.
