The Chancellor of the University of Ghana, Mrs. Mary Chinery-Hesse, has officially welcomed Ms. Marietta Agyeiwaa Brew as the newly appointed Chair of the reconstituted University Governing Council.

The brief but significant ceremony took place at the Chancellor’s residence following the Council’s inauguration by Minister for Education, Hon. Haruna Iddrisu.

Introducing the new Chair, Vice-Chancellor Prof. Nana Aba Appiah Amfo praised the diverse expertise of the reconstituted Council, noting the inclusion of four additional government appointees.

“There is a healthy mix of new members from diverse professional and academic backgrounds to help steer the affairs of the University,” she said.

Prof. Amfo emphasized the crucial role of the Council in shaping academic outcomes and ensuring graduates meet industry expectations.

“There are ongoing efforts to improve our academic and co-curricular programmes, all aimed at equipping students for a dynamic workforce,” she added.

In her remarks, Ms. Brew expressed appreciation for the trust placed in her leadership and committed to providing effective governance in alignment with UG’s strategic priorities. “We are here to contribute, not to interfere,” she stressed, promising collaboration and unity among Council members and the broader University community.

She highlighted the importance of teamwork and reassured stakeholders of the government’s non-interference in the University’s operations. “The charge from the Honourable Minister for Education has given us a clear direction—to support UG in producing quality graduates who can transform society,” she said.

Chancellor Chinery-Hesse congratulated Ms. Brew and expressed confidence in her leadership. “You bring a wealth of experience and expertise, and I am confident that you and your team will offer strong leadership to guide this University to greater heights,” she stated.

The Chancellor also applauded the outgoing Council for their dedication and contributions, which helped redefine the University’s strategic focus and impact. She called on the new Council to ensure UG remains aligned with industry needs, aiming to produce globally competitive and job-ready graduates.

“Our cooperation with government remains strong, and management is committed to ensuring UG’s continued excellence,” she affirmed. She further encouraged Ms. Brew to use her influence to advocate for the University’s priorities both nationally and internationally.

Also present at the event was the Registrar, Mrs. Emelia Agyei-Mensah, who serves as Secretary to the Council.
