Following the brutish actions taken by some northerners in some Ashanti towns, especially Kumawu and Mampong, upon the purported intention by President John Dramani Mahama to nominate or appoint native Ashantis as the District Chief Executive (DCE) and Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) respectively, for the areas, one cannot be faulted for asking if the NDC party belongs only to the northerners and voltarians.
In both Kumawu and Mampong, the northerners popularly known in Ashanti region and other parts of Ghana as the Zongo people, took to breaking into the NDC party offices in the area and destroyed any furniture and other items they could lay hands. While in that embarked upon process of destruction of property, they audaciously threatened to advise themselves on their membership to NDC, amid issuance of warningsto native Ashantis not to step foot in their demarcated zongos or else, have themselves to blame if anything occurs to them.
Boldly marking their turf in Ashanti towns, settlers as they are, if I may say? Asserting and establishing their dominance in Ashanti towns, minority in number as they are, similarly as a male lion will mark their territory in the jungle to ward off other male lions against trespassing!
Has the NDC not got a large native Ashantis membership both in Ashanti region and Ghana as a whole? If it has, why then are native Ashantis not eligible to hold DCE/MMCES positions in Ghana let alone, in the Ashanti region, as per the demonstrated animalistic behaviour put up by some Zongo guys in the mentioned towns a few weeks ago?
I could not believe my eyes and ears when I saw and heard on video the deplorable attitude by the Kumawu Zongo people destroying things and questioning why Dr Kwabena Duffour has expressed a view about preferring an Ashanti to become a DCE of Kumawu to having a Zongo guy?
While some among them seemed to insult him, others in their majority threatened to disassociate themselves from NDC if a Zongo guy they had expected to be appointed DCE ended up not to.
Could native Ashantis living in any of the northern regions ever dare behave in similar irresponsible manner and on such conditions? No, they had better not dare to or else, they will have become minced meat.
I don’t blame them but those native Ashantis or Akans in NDC that have no conscience, sold their birthright for money to bring such blemish upon the entire Ashantis considered strangers within NDC.
A note of advice to those of northern and voltarian extraction in NDC; please bear in mind that the NDC is made up of people from different tribes and regions, hence any member being eligible for top government or public post despite the obvious horrible posture by the party’s leaderships.
It serves the Ashantis in NDC right. For the love of money, some of you do accept the status quo, even if you are sidelined, to give the northerners and the voltarians the power, money, and fame they crave.
Have the Ashantis not become too wise to be relegated to the status of subordinates in NDC, if the reported behaviour of the Zongo guys is anything to go by?
To my fellow Ashantis, without being sarcastic, tribalistic but honest, I say, “Sɛ wani te bebrebe a, wo ma apɔnkye akye”.
I hope you get the point I am making. It will take wise people to understand the writer, a proud and fearless son of Kumawu/Asiampa soil.
