Gilbert Ampiah, a 17-year-old para-athlete from St. Augustine’s College, has clinched a bronze medal in the High Jump T44 category at the prestigious Crown Prince Moulay El Hassan International Para Athletics Meeting in Marrakech, Morocco.

With an impressive jump of 1.73 meters, Gilbert secured his first international medal—a remarkable testament to his dedication, hard work, and perseverance.

In 2023, physically challenged high jumper, Gilbert Ampiah conquered able bodied children in the heart of Ekumfi Atwa, recording a personal best of 1.60m.

3Sports paid him a visit and he knew then that his unthinkable aspiration of competing at the highest level can become a reality.

The St. Augustine first year student was handed an opportunity to test his skills at the just ended super zonals competition in a non-scoring high jump event, easily clearing the bar at 1.50m but fell short at 1.78m.

Following an impressive performance at the 2025 Cape Coast super zonals competition, Gilbert  gained the necessary recognition and was selected for Team Ghana for the 9th edition of the prestigious Para Athletics Meeting.

Some of Gilbert’s notable achievements include:

• Personal Bests:

• 1.60m: Cleared at Ekumfi Atwa in 2023, triumphing over able-bodied athletes.

• 1.82m: Set during St. Augustine’s inter-house competition.

• 1.86m: Achieved at a recent competitive event, marking his current personal best.

• Classification and Competition:

Gilbert underwent official classification from April 21 to 23, an essential step for formal recognition within para-athletics competition standards.

• Inspiration and Determination:

Gilbert’s relentless spirit and exceptional talent have made him a shining beacon of hope and inspiration for many Ghanaians.

This achievement not only highlights Gilbert’s incredible potential but also underscores Ghana’s growing presence in the international para-athletics scene.

The Marrakech competition also serves as a qualifier for the upcoming Commonwealth and Paralympic Games, providing Gilbert with a broader platform to showcase his ever-rising talent.

This experience and achievement will be greatly appreciated by Gilbert will always remember as he forges ahead to his Paralympic and Commonwealth dream.
