The Ashanti Regional Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Andrew Augustus Nana Kwasi, has called on President John Dramani Mahama to launch an immediate investigation into a fatal shooting in Nyinahin that left one person dead and three others injured.
The incident took place on April 24, 2025, when military personnel reportedly clashed with a group of mourners heading to a cemetery. The confrontation allegedly began after the security officers confronted a mourner wearing military camouflage attire. Tensions quickly escalated, resulting in the shooting death of Akwasi Lala, popularly known as Kushivi, and injuries to three others.
During a visit to the grieving families, Nana Kwasi strongly condemned the military’s use of deadly force, describing the act as unjustifiable. He emphasized that the deceased, Akwasi Lala, was a member of the NDC, and demanded justice for him and the injured victims.
“This is not an isolated case,” Nana Kwasi said, recalling a similar incident in Obuasi where several NDC members were shot and killed by military personnel. He called for accountability and urged the government to prevent further loss of life at the hands of security forces.
Meanwhile, the NDC’s Acting Ashanti Regional Secretary, Baah Acheamfuo, issued a two-week ultimatum to the government to find and prosecute those responsible. He warned that if authorities failed to act, he would personally lead a protest against the government.
The Ashanti Regional Police Command has announced that investigations into the shooting are underway.
In a related development, the Member of Parliament for Atwima Mponua, Seth Osei Akoto, visited the bereaved family to offer his condolences and urged the community to remain calm while the investigation proceeds.
