Kennedy Agyapong (L) and Kwame Baffoe Abronye play videoKennedy Agyapong (L) and Kwame Baffoe Abronye

An unexpected altercation that nearly disrupted the New Patriotic Party’s ongoing nationwide “Thank You Tour” on Monday, April 28, 2025, broke out between former Member of Parliament for Assin Central and a presidential aspirant of the party, Kennedy Agyapong, and the party’s Bono Regional Chairman, Kwame Baffoe Abronye, when the two leaders turned up for the tour in Berekum.

The tour in Berekum at Bono Region led by former Vice President of Ghana, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, was almost marred by a near physical confrontation between Kennedy Agyapong and Abronye as they exchanged words at the function.

Abronye, addressing the gathering, seized the moment to tackle some issues he found critical for the party to deal with which bordered on accusations that some members had leveled against him.

He recounted how he has been accused of masterminding a politically diabolic plot against a particular presidential candidate prior to the party’s internal elections last year and also bashed for owing allegiance to Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, the 2024 presidential candidate of the NPP.

Abronye refuted all claims as he spoke heartily to the people and in response to the barrage of criticisms about him, he explained what, to him, has brought the New Patriotic Party to opposition.

“Arrogance is what has brought us here,” he exclaimed.

He warned some persons within the party leadership to desist from making disparaging statements about the NPP that would give the ruling National Democratic Congress a political advantage as the NPP reorganizes itself for the 2028 elections.

He said; “If you insult someone and later come to talk about unity, for me, that unity is artificially created. Prof. Mike Oquaye’s report says it is our own utterances that the NDC used against us but if you do propaganda and someone comes to reply you, don’t sit on social media to insult the person and later turn around to tell me to be your friend.”

Although Abronye didn’t direct his message to a specific person, Kennedy Agyapong, who took his turn to address the members and supporters at the event, took a swipe at the former, however not mentioning Abronye’s name but showing gestures that pointed to him.

“I am telling you the truth, nobody is a better man than the other but because of this party, some people talk as if they are men. They are not men. When it comes to monetary contributions, they cannot partake in it. They have to go and beg and they talk as if the whole world is for them. If not for the sake of unity, some of them cannot even speak the way they speak because you are even shy coming to my house,” Kennedy furiously replied.

The former presidential aspirant warned Abronye and his likes to watch their tongue.

He stated; “With some, we buy cars for them and they will come out to do ‘too known’…I will respect you but I won’t respond to some people or else you would see a showdown…I have money; I don’t beg. Even you, poor people, think you can talk boldly, how about rich men like me? Please! Who born dog for you to talk anyhow?”
