‘We won’t let a mere 6 million-elected gov’t destroy Ghana’s democracy’ — LPG

The General Secretary of the Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG), Jerry Owusu Appauh, has slammed the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) government over the suspension of Chief Justice Gertrude Esaaba Torkornoo.

He stated that the LPG will not sit idle and watch a government elected by just a fraction of the country’s population destroy Ghana’s democratic foundations.

Speaking to the media, Mr. Owusu Appauh stressed that his party will join forces with other opposition parties to protest what they describe as the unconstitutional suspension of the Chief Justice.

“Ghana’s population is a little over 32 million, and this government won with a mere 6 million votes. We cannot sit aloof and allow these 6 million to dictate to the rest of us.

“Many of those who voted for this government are also against the removal of the Chief Justice. We will not sit and watch. We will resist. We are coming onto the streets, again and again,” he declared.

He added, “We know what we must do to compel the President to revoke this action. We won’t allow a minority-elected government to destroy our beautiful democracy.”

The main opposition party, the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has teamed up with four other political parties to protest the removal process of Chief Justice Torkornoo.

Her Ladyship was suspended with immediate effect on Tuesday, April 22, by President John Dramani Mahama, after a prima facie case was established in consultation with the Council of State based on petitions brought against her.

According to the protesting opposition parties—which include the LPG, National Democratic Party (NDP), and the People’s National Party (PNP)—the move constitutes a blatant disregard for the rule of law and a calculated attempt to undermine judicial independence.
