Former Assin Central Member of Parliament, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, has formally declared his intention to contest the next flagbearer race of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP).
The outspoken politician, who unsuccessfully ran for the flagbearership in 2023, asserted that nothing would stop him from joining the race again.
Speaking to the media on Wednesday, April 30, Mr. Agyapong hinted that he would officially launch his campaign at the appropriate time.
“I want everybody to know—every party member—that I’m going to contest, so they should be ready. And respectfully, nobody can tell me to back off. I will not back off, because we started from the 1990s till now.
“At the appropriate time, I assure them that we are also going to campaign,” he said.
His announcement comes after he pulled out of the ongoing NPP nationwide post-election thank-you tour following an alleged stabbing of one of his supporters by a party vigilante.
The incident, including his reported clash with Kwame Baffoe Abronye, the party’s Bono Regional Chairman, according to Mr. Agyapong, indicates that his presence is not needed on the tour.
“It is a clear indication. What happened in Kumasi tells me that, look, you are not needed. You are not wanted. So we are pulling out. Let them do their own thing.
“Myself and my team want to pull out. Lives are threatened and I don’t think I can protect my team enough, so I will pull out so Dr. Bawumia can continue with his campaign,” he stated.
