KATH CEO’s Removal: Lecturer calls for non-political appointments to head Teaching Hospitals

A Senior Lecturer at the Kumasi Technical University (KsTU), Dr. Collins Kankam Kwarteng has called for Ghana to relook at the political appointment of Chief Executive Officers for Teaching Hospitals in the country.

Dr. Kwarteng has suggested that the hospitals use their internal hierarchy and mechanisms to select their own CEOs.

This comes after the Chief Executive Officer for the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital in the Ashanti Region, Professor Okyere Addai Mensah, was relieved of his duties following a change in government.

Addressing the matter on the Kumasi-based OTEC 102.9 FM’s morning show, ‘Nyansapo’, on Monday May 5, 2025, Dr. Kwarteng said the over-politicisation of health issues affects healthcare delivery in the country.

“Just like the universities where they elect their own heads, I strongly believe teaching hospitals must be allowed to use their own internal structures to select their own leaders,” he the programme told Kwaku Owusu Boateng.

“Following the discussions around Prof. Addai Mensah’s situation, clearly most of the people are happy with him, as he’s working very well for the hospital, but he’s leaving due to politics, which for me is bad,” Dr. Kwarteng lamented.

He argued that pushing political hands off teaching hospitals will improve services at the various facilities.
