ECG targets end-of-year deadline to fix power outages in Accra

The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has announced an ambitious plan to resolve most localised faults in Accra by the end of 2025.

This initiative is aimed at eliminating unplanned power flickering and temporary outages in the capital.

Speaking at the commissioning of a mobile substation at Tse-Addo on Monday, May 5, 2025, ECG’s General Manager in charge of Accra Sub-Transmission, Engineer Francis Kofi Atsyatsya, said that ECG had already planned these system upgrades as part of its 2025 operational roadmap, even before performance benchmarks were introduced by the Energy Ministry.

“We are confident that by the end of this year, we will have resolved most of the power-related issues, including outages and low voltage,” he assured.

He added that the commissioning of a mobile substation is part of a broader transformer capacity improvement project in Accra and parts of the Volta Region.

According to him, six key areas are targeted for upgrades: Lashibi, Batsona, Teshie, Nungua, Adenta, Ridge, and Denu in the Volta Region.

“Tse-Addo receives power from our Trade Fair substation. The area is rapidly developing with many high-rise buildings, leading to frequent outages and low-voltage issues. We’ve relocated a mobile substation from Agbogba to Tse-Addo to address these challenges,” he explained.

The mobile substation, previously used during upgrades at Agbogba, will help stabilise the power supply in Tse-Addo by shortening long transmission lines from the Trade Fair substation, identified as the cause of voltage drops and outages.

“The first phase of the installation will take one week, with the entire project expected to be completed in six weeks,” he added.
